Kristi Waters has won this Best of San Antonio category for seven years and counting, which is a testament not just to her skill, energy and humor but to her inspirational story. Versatile and hardworking, the Corpus Christi native has shown a tireless ability to blend humor and glamor with one-woman comedy shows and campy Golden Girls spoofs while turning heads as a performer, entertainment director and source of inspiration for so many in the LGBTQ+ community. Last year, the community came together for her as she faced down Stage 3 cancer, taking on grueling chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Thankfully, the disease is now in remission and Waters is back onstage shining a guiding light for the Alamo City.

Gabby Congrains
A graduate of McCollum High School and UT San Antonio, Manuel Navarro Jr. will make his directorial debut with the short film Garden Valley at the San Antonio Film Festival (SAFILM). The short, which is based on the Mann family murders in San Antonio in 1988, follows two friends lost in a haze of rock, drugs and toxic romance. Navarro was in sixth grade when the crimes took place, and it clearly left an impression. “What resonated with me was the horrific descriptions of that case and the hard-rock culture at that time,” Navarro, 49, told the Current. “I hope viewers learn to never forget the past that shaped us — the good and the bad. And never forget the victims.” Garden Valley screens at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts at 9:30 p.m. on July 25.
