  • ORO at the Emily Morgan Hotel

    705 E. Houston San Antonio

    (210) 244-0146

In the lobby of the Emily Morgan Hotel, guests will find pure gold – the ORO Restaurant and Bar. Spanish for "gold," ORO provides diners in San Antonio with a superb culinary dining experience that centers upon Executive Chef Moses Cruz's regional Texas cuisine. ;Open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and with high-speed wireless Internet service throughout the restaurant and bar, ORO features a daily Happy Hour from 5:00 to 7:00pm with drink specials available. The ORO margarita was recently selected as the "Best Margarita in all of San Antonio." The extensive martini menu has been rated as one of the top three in all of San Antonio.;;For San Antonio fine dining, ORO offers a spectacular new menu each season served in one of the most stunning dining rooms in all of San Antonio. The sophisticated space features dark wood floors, high-backed booths, chairs upholstered in smoked-salmon colored fabric, and subtle lighting of custom-made fabric cones and votive candles.
  • Oro in the Emily Morgan Hotel

    705 E. Houston Downtown

    (210) 225-5100

Here's a promise: In writing about Oro, there will be no cheap references to "good as gold," "gold standard," "fool's gold," etc. Although it's tempting, very tempting. My first comment does have to do with gold as a color: The faded blue denim shirts on the waiters have to go - with the possible exception of the one on our waiter. (It matched his eyes, according to a dining companion who notices such things.) As a part of last year's redo of the Emily Morgan, Oro rose from the ashes of the utterly undistinguished Yellow Rose Café. Now garbed in golds and deep browns, illuminated by handsome fabric pendants, sconces, and votive candles, and sporting such flagrantly opulent touches as an alabaster bar glowing from lights placed beneath, the restaurant has an air of elegance rivaled by few in the city. The second-string waitstaff is garbed in black, tunic-style jackets. So what's with the denim? Think of an evening at Oro as theater, and you'll understand where I'm coming from. Thinking of the menu as Modern Italian, as it claims to be, may help define its direction some, but isn't really necessary to enjoyment of the meal. - Ron Bechtol

  • The Phoenix Saloon

193 W. San Antonio St., New Braunfels San Antonio

    (830) 643-1400

; A highly authentic Tejas melting pot resurrected and restored in old New Braunfels, with 15 beers on tap and ungovernable music tendencies: outlaw country, rock, honky-tonk, punk, Tex-Mex, etc.

  • Piccolo's

    5703 Evers San Antonio

    (210) 647-5524

Piccolo's has long seemed like the quintessential red-sauce palace- dark, dependable, but hardly inspiring. Though the gallon jugs of Carlo Rossi that greeted us upon entry hardly promised a new gastronomic experience on this occasion, the actual wine list was not the only surprise to come; one of us has lightened up over the years, and it's most likely the restaurant. - Ron Bechtol
  • Pieca D'Italia

    502 River Walk San Antonio

    (210) 227-5511

    Great authentic Italian food.
  • Piedras Negras de Noche

    1312 S. Laredo San Antonio

    (210) 227-7777

You can see Piedras Negras de Noche from the highway, where the exit from I-35 South leads to Cevallos and Laredo streets. It's a big, two-story restaurant with its name painted at highway height. Given the easy accessibility, it's a wonder that I didn't visit years ago — it took a friend's recommendation to motivate me toward the South Side destination. While I waited for the other members of my party (Piedras Negras doesn't seat you 'til they all arrive), I watched in amazement as the joint filled up fast on a recent Thursday night. Families, couples, and two birthday parties filed past me to what is clearly a favorite neighborhood haunt. The interior is refreshing: decorated more toward a Mexican ranch than a fiesta motif, it advises you right off that this food is devoted to classic norteño fare. The menu, heavy on the steaks and beans, confirms it. - Retha Oliver
  • Pig Stand (Rigsby)

    3054 Rigsby San Antonio

    (210) 333-8231

Large, satisfying, inexpensive breakfasts are one of the Pig Stand's features. For lunch, the price is a bit higher but still reasonable and they feature a nice pork barbecue sandwich, known as the Pig Sandwich. They get their name from the size of their meals, if that gives you any idea.
  • Quicksands Cafe & Bakery

    502 Embassy Row San Antonio

    (210) 496-2233

  • Rita's on the River

245 E. Commerce St. San Antonio

    (210) 227-7482

Rita's on the River occupies the space that was once Presidio's. Though the new restaurant does not have the same elegant interior of Presidio's, prices are better. The cuisine ranges from a $4.95 burger to a $23.75 South Padre platter with skewers of sirloin and shrimp.
  • Romano's Macaroni Grill (I-10)

  • Rosario's Mexican Café y Cantina

910 S. Alamo St. San Antonio

Salsa is extremely good here. Dishes are interesting and exciting vs. familiar and soul.
  • Rudy's Country Store & Bar-b-que

    24059 Old Fredericksburg San Antonio

    (210) 698-7177

Rudy's Country Store and Bar-B-Que proclaims itself the "Worst Bar-B-Que in Texas." A primitive protest of my own is now in order: Unless the bellwether brisket improves markedly, this tongue-in-cheek claim is in danger of becoming more fact than ad-copy fiction. Dry, boring, and even visually unappealing, the purported pride of Texas "Q," came alive only with liberal lashings of Rudy's famous (and famously sweet-sour) "sause." - Ron Bechtol
  • Rudy's Seafood

    4122 S. Flores San Antonio

    (210) 532-1315

Heaping platters of very fresh fried seafood are the draw at Rudy’s unadorned ordering counter. The crab cakes served stuffed inside deep-fried shells are a standout, but the oysters and shrimp are plump, the fish flaky and non-greasy. We recommend hot sauce.

  • Saigon Express

    1626 McCullough San Antonio

    (210) 277-1899

Raspberry would be good. So would lime, creamy vanilla, orange sherbet, blueberry, even a dark and tarry licorice - but not chocolate or caramel. No, I'm not talking ice cream flavors. This is a list of the colors that you might consider wearing when you visit Saigon Express. The restaurant's interior is the most amazingly intense light blue I have ever encountered in a restaurant, and since there is nothing on the walls to compete, you are it. So don't clash. (To the woman with the raspberry blouse - who prevailed on the congenial owner to allow her to come back and pay later - you're the inspiration for all this.)- Ron Bechtol
