  • Shang-Hai Chinese Restaurant

2935 Pat Booker, Universal City San Antonio

    (210) 658-5828

Shang-Hai is a third-generation Kimura family secret surreptitiously shared with any and everyone we know. Of course, it's a lot easier to eat there when you don't live 30 minutes away, but the dependable food is definitely worth the drive up I-35. I won't pretend to understand the pretensions of authentic Chinese cuisine, but I am comfortable enough with casual American-Chinese cooking to say that Shang-Hai is absolutely solid — from their crisp, pork-carrot-cabbage-crammed egg rolls to their thick patties of egg foo young. And it is a quiet place — save for the Sunday swarm of church goers and inevitable weekday lunch bunches — tucked comfortably into a small shopping center, an appropriate locale for a family restaurant. The husband-and-wife team of Ken and Ba Lam head the dining room, and know at least half of their customers by name or by order; while co-owner Tai Ngo is steadfast in the kitchen, preparing the dishes with recipes he brought to the business from his native Vietnam. - Wendi Kimura

  • Sina Restaurant

    6407 Blanco San Antonio

    (210) 348-7462

If skewered meats and shimmying midriffs are your idea of a Persian (or Greek or Turkish ... ) dining experience, then you've come to the right place. And to the wrong one. For though the Friday night belly dancer could bounce with the best of them, and the shish-kabobs of tender beef left little to be desired, to stop there would be to miss the point of Sina, a stylish place with much more on its plate than baubles, bangles, and browned bits of beef. Sina replaces a previous Persian restaurant in the same location, one that had a Middle Eastern grocery store attached. Our attentive and sartorially spiffy waiter claimed there was no connection between the two, and we'll have to believe him, but the menu is inevitably similar, and the meal did start out in the same, traditional way with a refreshing, palate-perking plate of parsley, scallions, radishes, feta, and flatbread.;- Ron Bechtol

Paul Brooks, the proprietor of Snack & Smack Bar-B-Que, formerly Big Mama's Soul Food restaurant, at 820 New Braunfels Ave., cooks barbecue brisket, ribs, sausage, and other local favorites over seasoned mesquite wood six days a week. He rests on Sunday. After he loads up a portable barbecue pit with mesquite wood and lights it, Brooks wraps a rack of marinated pork ribs in aluminum foil and lays it on the grill. He then hitches the pit to a van that bears the Snack & Smack Bar-B-Que sign, and pulls it into the parking lot of the Government Hill restaurant. The smoke attracts loyal customers who come for a barbecue plate with a choice of soul food sides: rice, spinach, beans, mashed potatoes, corn, cabbage, chitterlings, yams, black-eyed peas, homemade macaroni and cheese, and bread, all for $5.50. - Michael Cary

  • Sompong's Thai & Chinese Cuisine

    8110 Fredricksburg San Antonio

    (210) 614-0845

Psst! Here's an insider tip: If, on an ordinary weeknight, you sit at the right table at Sompong's, your culinary/cultural experience will be much enhanced. What is the right table, you ask? The one where the waitresses, when not otherwise occupied, are folding napkins. I'm not talking about picking up a little kitchen Thai on the sly - although the language does have a certain exotic appeal - rather, it's what they're snacking on while working that is interesting: Dried, almost caramelized-looking fish about the size of a quarter were one example; we didn't ask to taste them. But we did sample some pieces of crunchy green papaya dipped in a mixture of sugar, salt, and ground, dried chiles. Great stuff. And you'll never find it on a menu. - Ron Bechtol

  • Sushi Zushi (Downtown)

    203 S St. Mary's San Antonio

    (210) 472-2900

When you enter Sushi Zushi, assuming it's not a jam-packed Saturday night, you'll be greeted with a chorus of shouts in Japanese from the waitstaff and sushi chefs. As startling as it may seem (and many potential diners took great pains to ignore it), "Welcome!" is their message. (Irasshaimase!, if you prefer.) Yes, with exclamation points. And it's typical of the restaurant's enthusiastic attitude. Get used to it. ;The exuberance spills over into other areas as well. Despite a pleasant, minimalist decor featuring melon-toned walls, a laminate floor intended to emulate wide-board pine, and some black-and-white images of the sushi-making art, SZ doesn't come across as understated shibui. You can't sit at a counter to watch sushi masters assemble your order with deft hand and quiet dignity. In the place of deferential waitresses in traditional garb, there are kids in grey polos and black pants. And numerous items on the almost intimidatingly long menu, feature chipotle mayonnaise. Get used to that, too. - Ron Bechtol
