  • Picante Grill

    3810 Broadway San Antonio

    (210) 822-3797

San Antonians are an especially stubborn lot when it comes to Mexican food; we have our firmly held opinions, our favorite places ... and, frequently, our black holes of utter ignorance. Just as an unconverted outsider might find it strange that otherwise rational people would seek out a dark and dingy dining room for the express purpose of eating leathery enchiladas filled with yellow cheese, topped with thin, chile gravy, and strewn with chopped, raw onion, so do we compadres in crime have trouble imagining a world in which Mexican cuisine is as subtle and sophisticated as any on the planet. This is a wake-up call, y'all: There is a wonderful world of food beyond that narrow strip that is Carlos Fuentes' MexAmerica. Picante Grill is one way to get from here to there.;- Ron Bechtol

  • Piccolo's

    5703 Evers San Antonio

    (210) 647-5524

Piccolo's has long seemed like the quintessential red-sauce palace- dark, dependable, but hardly inspiring. Though the gallon jugs of Carlo Rossi that greeted us upon entry hardly promised a new gastronomic experience on this occasion, the actual wine list was not the only surprise to come; one of us has lightened up over the years, and it's most likely the restaurant. - Ron Bechtol

  • Piedras Negras de Noche

    1312 S. Laredo San Antonio

    (210) 227-7777

You can see Piedras Negras de Noche from the highway, where the exit from I-35 South leads to Cevallos and Laredo streets. It's a big, two-story restaurant with its name painted at highway height. Given the easy accessibility, it's a wonder that I didn't visit years ago — it took a friend's recommendation to motivate me toward the South Side destination. While I waited for the other members of my party (Piedras Negras doesn't seat you 'til they all arrive), I watched in amazement as the joint filled up fast on a recent Thursday night. Families, couples, and two birthday parties filed past me to what is clearly a favorite neighborhood haunt. The interior is refreshing: decorated more toward a Mexican ranch than a fiesta motif, it advises you right off that this food is devoted to classic norteño fare. The menu, heavy on the steaks and beans, confirms it. - Retha Oliver
  • Pig Stand (Rigsby)

    3054 Rigsby San Antonio

    (210) 333-8231

Large, satisfying, inexpensive breakfasts are one of the Pig Stand's features. For lunch, the price is a bit higher but still reasonable and they feature a nice pork barbecue sandwich, known as the Pig Sandwich. They get their name from the size of their meals, if that gives you any idea.
  • Pizza Classics

    2110 Broadway San Antonio

    (210) 225-3355

  • Pizza Italia

    3023 Thousand Oaks San Antonio

    (210) 494-8646

Pizza and beer. If civilization stagnates, one can make the argument that it was a successful venture based on the development of these two creations alone. Pizza is modern manna, beer the benignly bitter nectar from the breast of the Food Goddess. Logically, the finest pizza parlors must have ample and quality beers along with their pies. In the pantheon of San Antonio pizzerias, the pizza and beer gods smile on only one for its combination of top-notch pizza and first-class brew: Pizza Italia. Although the number of fine San Antonio pizzerias doesn't rival the likes of New York or Philadelphia, one in particular holds its own with the East Coast competition. Pizza Italia's fare reminds me of the pies of my Philly youth: large, round, hand-tossed, filling, and tasty. While not a showy pie, nor the kind of specialty pie you try as a diversion, Italia's traditional pizza is like a friend you want to regularly invite for dinner.;- Steve Woolbert
